Bandon were made to work hard for their victory in this second round junior cup tie at home to Cobh. Playing into an extremely strong wind in the first half, the home side exerted enough pressure to ensure that Cobh were unable to establish a platform to take advantage of the elements. The majority of the game was played around the middle of the field but when the visiting half backs managed to clear the ball downfield, it was dealt with comfortably by Gearoid Crowley and Olan Crowley at the back. Captain Tom Ferguson went off injured which saw Michale Beecher move across to No. 8 and also take on most the responsibility at the lineout. The work rate of the Bandon pack was quite outstanding with man of the match Tim Crowley covering every blade of grass, both in attack and defence. Just before half time, Cobh had their best period of pressure but the defence looked assured at all times. At half time it was 00-00.
In the second half, again the majority of the game was played around the middle of the field which would have been a source of frustration for Bandon. However the value of Richie Walsh as a place kicker came to the fore. He knocked over a 48 metre penalty to open his side’s account. He added two further penalties to give Bandon a nine point cushion with twenty minutes to go. A try eventually followed when a series of drives infield from the pack saw the play switched to the right where Christian Mulcahy put Dan Swithenbank away in the right corner. Cobh, then had a sustained period of pressure in the Bandon ’22 but again the home defence looked extremely organised and managed to win a penalty which allowed them to clear their lines. Walsh went on to add two further long range penalties which brought the final score to 20-00.
Bandon are now into the third round, which won’t take place until March, at home against the winners of Skibbereen v Waterford City.
In the meantime Bandon currently lie second in the Munster Junior League and resume their campaign on the 14th February at home to Kilfeacle.
