Richmond Ladies 12-14 Bandon Ladies
The Bandon Women’s Rugby Team got themselves off to a winning start in their league campaign today which finished as a narrow away win against Richmond 14-12.
The opening game of the season proved to be a tough one against a strong Richmond side in which both teams never gave up until the final whistle blew .The game showed off some satisfying performances from all players especially those who made their debut with the Bandon side Michelle Hayes, Rachel Quinn and Ca O Donoghue. The battle began with a kick off from the Richmond side into the hands of the eager Bandon side that were more than determined for a win. In the twelfth minute after countless scrums and some great back play a gap opened up just before the halfway line which created an opportunity for Aisling O Sullivan , who sprinted past the defence to score the opening try for the Bandon side underneath the posts, which she also converted. This brought the score to 7-0 for the Bandon side. Shortly after in the sixteenth minute a quick break from the Richmond side just 5 metres from the try line brought the score to 7-5. Before halftime a loose ball from the Richmond side created an opportunity again for the Bandon Women inside the twenty-two. A light kick on the ground from Aisling O Sullivan and again by Lynda O Donovan created the space Bandon needed for Lynda to score the second try of the game in the right hand corner and it was skilfully converted by Eileen Foley. Score at half time 14-5. At halftime an injury to Orla Hickey lead to the subbing in of Susan Dominey. The second half as expected was as tough as the first with a try and conversion by the opposition in the opening few minutes which brought the score to 14-12. An injury to Kim Quinn and Fiona Coffey lead to the subbing in of Ca O Donoghue and Emma Lovell both just recovered from injury. The determination of the Bandon side lead to a tough fight, to hold the win until the final whistle.
