Bandon moved up to fourth spot in the Munster Junior League table after a hard fought encounter at Old Chapel last Sunday. In dry conditions, the home side defended the clubhouse end in the opening half and played with the slight breeze at their backs. They found themselves three points in arrears after five minutes when Galbally scrum half Jack O’Mullane kicked a 37 metre penalty. Galbally were reasonably efficient at recycling the ball, without ever causing Bandon any major headaches defensively. Bandon had the greater territorial advantage but were guilty of trying to force the game, as well of missing two kicks at goal. They had to wait until the 39th minute to equalise through the boot of Sean Og Murphy. However on the stroke of half time, O’Mullane restored his side’s lead with another penalty.
O’Mullane was again on target on 46 minutes with a further penalty to make it 09-03. Similar to the first half, Bandon were dominating territorially, but a number of penalty concessions and handling errors let Galbally off the hook on several occasions. The turning point in this game came on 60 minutes, when a Jack Murphy cross kick was picked up on the bounce by Gearoid O’Leary on the left wing. He popped back inside to Kerry Desmond, who linked well with his supporting players. After a couple of quick phases, the ball was spun out to Sean Og Murphy who managed to get the ball out of the tackle to the onrushing Gareth Burton who touched down under the posts. Bandon had opportunities to add to their try tally, but superb defence by Galbally kept them at bay. Sean Og Murphy finished off the scoring with a penalty in front of the posts with the last play of the game to leave the final score at 13-09. Best for Bandon was Michael Beecher who was excellent at openside wing forward, with loosehead prop Colin Jackson also giving a noteworthy performance.
This Sunday 04th December, Bandon are again in league action, away to Skibbereen at 2:30. Bandon’s J2s are also away to Skibbereen at 12 in the league.
